Writing auto-indentation code in Emacs has always been a black art. With Emacs-23.4 came a new package smie.el which attempts to make it easier and more structured by splitting the work into writing a lexer, a parser, and some indentation rules. I would present the motivation behind the design, the benefits and limits, as well as some examples of how to make use of it in your own major mode.
